FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q:
It keeps asking me for
my password, why?
A: There could be a number of reasons.
Check your keyboard and make sure that your
num lock
light and caps lock light are not lit. If your caps lock is not on delete the user name and
password and retype them, be sure not to include any spaces before or after the username
and password! If it keeps asking for your password after checking your keyboard settings,
you may need to call us.

Q:
I keep getting
disconnected from my Internet connection. What could be the problem?
A: There are a number of factors that can
interfere with your connection and cause you to be disconnected.
Your connection is automatically disconnected after 15
minutes of inactivity . That means, that if you have not done anything (check
email, load a web page, download a file) within 15 minutes, you will lose your connection. You can, of course,
dial back in immediately. This necessary feature helps keep the busy signals rare.
Problems with line noise: Unfortunately, often the
problem arises when your phone lines at home or neighborhood are relatively old or
improperly wired and thus cause line noise to interfere with your connection. This will
cause your connection to us to be interrupted randomly. In most areas, you can dial 611
and have your phone line automatically checked for errors. We highly recommend you do
this.
Call Waiting: If you have call waiting on your line
and you have not disabled it (usually by entering a "*70," before your dial up
number), it may interfere with your connection when someone calls your
line. Make sure you disable call waiting before
you dial.
Outdated Drivers:
You should visit the website of the manufacturer of your modem or
computer. Most companies update the software for their modems and
offer the upgrade free of charge on their website. If you have the
most recent drivers for your modem, you will lower your chances of
getting disconnected and ensure the fastest most reliable connection
possible to Succeed.Net's modem servers.
Poor quality modem:
Cheap modems don't always work
correctly and are not always 100% compatible. We recommend that you only buy common
name brands. We use U.S. Robotics and can guarantee that they are 100% compatible
with our service. U.S. Robotics Courier models are particularly good at working with
poor quality phone lines, even in areas where nothing else works.

Q:
I get an error that says
the server cannot be found, why?
A: There are many reasons that this may happen
Sometimes a DNS error is reported when your computer
cannot establish a connection with a remote server. A Domain Name Server (DNS) is
used to translate the easy to remember name (URL) into a computer address - much like
looking up a phone number in the phone book. This error means that your computer
cannot find the address you are trying to connect to. There are a number of factors that
could cause this:
Not Connected: You may have lost your connection to
the Internet. Try checking your mail or any other Internet activity that normally works.
If nothing seems to work, close all your programs and try dialing in again.
Busy: The server you are trying to connect to could be
busy. Depending on what time of day you are trying to connect, the page you are trying to
access may be overloaded (too many people wanting to view the page at the same time). Try
again in a few minutes. Often popular sites, like Netscape and Microsoft, will experience
this.
Server Down: The server you are trying to connect to
could be down. It happens to the best of us. Try back later!
Incorrect Address: You may have typed in an incorrect
address (URL). Check the address and try again.
Internic:
Sometimes the
Internic, the people
responsible for keeping a database of all the domain names on the Internet, will go down.
If one of their main servers goes down LOTS of people will be stuck and will keep getting
DNS errors. All you can do at this point is wait (after you have tried the above hints).
Routers Down: The Internet is made up of millions of
connections hooked up by a vast multinational network. Routers are the devices that help
connect your computer with others located all over the world. If one of them has a problem
you will not be able to go past it. All you can do is try back later. The routers are
usually diagnosed and fixed very soon if they break, but the Internet is growing so fast
that some are overloaded during peak hours and too busy to let you through. We are
constantly monitoring for malfunctioning routers here at Succeed.Net, but there is nothing
we can do about other companies' routers.
Incorrect DNS
and/or Gateway Settings: You may have incorrectly configured your
Internet settings for use with our service. You must have the correct
DNS numbers in order to
assure proper DNS operation. You should
configure your system to auto-configure these numbers whenever possible.

Q:
I keep getting a message that
says 404 error.
A: This typically means that the page you were
looking for doesn't exist.
Try retyping the address in your browser again. If it
still comes up not found then the page may be down temporarily or may gone completely.
This is called "Link Rot" and is common with the fast changing world of the
Internet. The internet is a vast wealth of information. Usually if you do a search
for the same information you wanted, you'll find a few thousand other web pages
that deal
with the same content.

Q:
Some web sites load really
slow. How do I find out what is slowing it down?
A: When you connect to a web site on the
Internet the data is actually being sent though many different routers before it comes to
your computer. If any of those routers are overloaded by too much traffic then the data
will take longer to reach you, making the web site load slower. If youre wondering
which server is slowing you down, Windows 95 has a way for you to check the speed of each
router:
Click on your Start button. (Bottom left
of your screen)
Go to Programs, click on MS-DOS
Prompt (or select "Run" and type in "command")
Type tracert www.somewhere.com (Replace
www.somewhere.com with the web servers name that is giving you trouble, do not type in the
full URL)
The screen will list the speed in milliseconds (ms) of
all the routers you must go through before you can reach the web site. It will print 3
speeds for each router. If there is a mix of numbers and asterisk (*) characters in a
routers time line then the router is very overloaded and can't keep up. If the time
line contains only * characters then the router is either insanely overloaded or doesn't
support the trace route program. Another cause for seeing three * characters instead of
times are Firewalls. Firewalls increase security at a site by limiting what can
access their computers. Some sites refuse to let trace route packets in to prevent people
from making a list of all the computers on their network.

Q:
Every time I check my mail,
it keeps asking me for my password.
A: If you can connect to the internet, but
your mail program keeps asking for your password, your mailbox is probably too full.
Succeed.net gives you 5 MB of space for mail and personal web pages. If someone sends you
more than 5 MB in mail and you leave it in there too long, then the service gets stuck
(You do not loose mail however). To fix this problem you must call us, and have us
temporarily increase your mail quota. If you are consistently getting large mail files, we
have optional disk space packages that you can buy.

Q:
Why can't I connect at
33.6k or 56k like my modem states it can?
A: Although your modem says it is
"Capable" of speeds "up to" 33.6k or 56k, that doesn't mean that is
the speed you will always get.
Very few people can reach
the maximum speed their modem supports. Speeds of 28,800 bps or faster require
near perfect line conditions along the entire length of the connection. However, 28.8k and
33.6k modems are capable of pushing the limits of analog phone lines, commonly offering
connect speeds of 26,400bps or higher.
US Regulations mandate that 56k modems
cannot access at speeds higher than 53k. Although these modems are called 56k modems, they
really are only 53k max modems. Typically most users connect at 44,000 to 52,222
connections with v.90, V.92 & X2 modems.
Line quality differs from region to region, and it may
be a problem with the phone lines. There are many places in this area that do not support
high speed modem connections. Pac-Bell will only guarantee 2400bps, but you may be able to
call "611" to speak with a Pac-Bell representative to see if there is anything
you can do.

How to get
a faster internet connection with my
modem
Sometimes your connection
may seem slow or may seem like it halts every once in awhile. This is
more noticeable when you are playing online games. We've put together
a few helpful tips on how to keep your connection as fast and clear as
possible.
Contact your computer
manufacturer or modem manufacturer and get the latest drivers for your
modem. This usually results in the largest improvement to your
connect speeds and reliability.
Have a shorter phone cord from
your computer to the wall jack. Having a shorter cord means that the
signal from your computer to the main telephone line has fewer chances
of loosing signal strength. If at all possible do not use line
splitters or extension cords. These tend to create a slower internet
connection. Also make sure that the phone plugs are firmly placed into
the computer and the wall jack.
Purchasing a magnetic line choke
for your phone line also seems to help speed up the connection and
transfer rates you get. You can purchase something like this from
radio shack.

Not everyone can get a perfect
connection. There are many factors that are involved in line clarity
for the internet. Much has to do with the quality of your phone lines
where you live or work, the time of day (how congested the internet
is), and the quality of your modem.

Cleaning
up your cache to free Hard Drive Space
Most computers use Disk
Caching. When your disk cache gets full, it may seem as if web pages
are coming up slower than usual. This is because the disk cache has to
empty itself for free space to include the new files. This increases
the speed of your computer slightly.
Its always best to clear your disk
cache at least once a month, once a week if possible. This helps speed
up your computer when browsing the internet. To clear your disk cache
do the following steps.
Netscape:
Go to Network Preferences
in the Options menu, and then click on the Cache tab.
Windows users should clear both the disk cache and the memory cache.
Macintosh users should clear the disk cache.
Internet Explorer 3.0.x
Open Internet Explorer.
Go to the View menu and select Options.
Switch to the Advanced tab (across the
top).
Under the “Temporary Internet Files” section, click
on View Files.
Click on Empty Folder.
Internet Explorer 4.0.x
Open Internet Explorer.
Go to the View menu and select Internet
Options.
Switch to the General tab (across the
top).
Under the "Temporary Internet Files" section,
press the Delete Files button
